National Career Education Week 18-22 May
National Career Development week aims to raise awareness of the importance of career education. We decided to go virtual with our events to engage students in conversation about specific careers, as well as to highlight the value of networking and how to best place yourself as leaders of the future. We also engaged with tertiary providers where Year 12 students had the opportunity to ask valuable questions.
Breakfast with Deakin Q & A session.
Year 12 Senior Boys participated in a Q & A Session with Deakin University. Advice from Deakin is that as a nation it is predicted we will be coming out of the economic downturn by the time class of 2020 are all graduating from their University courses. The Deakin representative suggested that the economy is predicted to be in full recovery by 2024. The strong advice remains for students to study what they are passionate about and interested in. Of course students need to be very aware of the skill shortage areas, and predicted in demand jobs for our future . However, students are encourage not to make any rash changes to their career/course ideas based on the current pandemic. Instead please speak with the Careers Practitioner if they feel concerned about their proposed area of study or future work.
Networking, Leadership & the Legal Profession
Mr Philip Battye former Chair of School Council and Life Governor of the school is recognised as a national award-winning lawyer. Philip, partner at HWL Ebsworth Lawyers connected online with senior students and shared his thoughts on Leadership, Networking and the Legal profession.
“Having Mr Battye share his life experiences and advice was very insightful. Mr Battye shared his views on the legal profession as a lifelong path, as well as exploring the qualities that make a successful leader and career. It was fascinating to hear his perspectives surrounding the stigma of “university prestige” and employability, giving us insight into the power of activity beyond school. With the uncertainty of the world at the moment, it was fantastic to hear advice about life after school.” Oliver Ward – School Captain – Senior Boys.
