From the Principal – 1 March 2019

A True Community

In the last few weeks there have been a number of events where our community has stood as one while many in our community have faced enormous challenges. Staff, parents, current and past students have come together to support each other and source the joy, companionship and love that can be found in the darkest of times. In my role as Principal I can see how all have responded willingly and with courage to the needs of others – I have been proud and in awe of your responses. It demonstrates to me the benefit of sending children to a school like this. These responses are something that cannot be measured in dollars alone. Dr Rufus Black, ethicist and educator has spoken in the past of ‘thick’ and ‘thin’ communities. Thick communities are those that know themselves, know what they stand for and can cope with the brunt of challenges that can harm others. Thin communities are brittle and fracture easily. Characterized by rapidly changing identity, they break down when they are faced with events that require more of us than in restful times. When things are going well, all communities shine, it is when the hard times hit, that the real mettle of a group is tested.

I thank all for what they have done over the past few weeks to support people in all parts of the school and beyond. We are determined to support our young people to be the best they can be for all humanity and the planet.
