Melbourne Synchrotron

The Year 12 BGS and SMS Physics classes showed their determination to do well in Physics this year by attending an excursion at the Melbourne Synchrotron at Monash during the school holidays.

After an initial introduction to the synchrotron and a tour of the facility the students completed some experiments in a university laboratory environment. Students explore diffraction and interference using lasers and some engaging software. The students soon became adept at the efficient use of the equipment. This was followed by the collection of data related to emission spectra of vapour lamps.

This experimentation relates directly to Unit 4 content and allowed the students to access some excellent equipment and to experience lab work in the university environment.

Students were privileged to see how synchrotron radiation is used in contemporary application like to analyse layers of paint on priceless paintings without damaging the art work.
