Records Fall as BGS Boys Crowned SIS Athletics Champions!

The 2019 SIS Division B Athletics Carnival saw 7 schools descend upon Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park for a day filled with fun and competition. Our BGS squad, comprising between 5 and 10 students from each year level had put in the hard yards at the BGS Athletics carnival, and on the training track so went into the day supremely confident.

From a team perspective we had some great results across the board, with our Open age team, finishing a heartbreaking one point behind St John’s College in 2^nd place and our Under 15 and Under 17 squads both securing the Pennant as SIS Champions. These great efforts by each individual team lead to our school to victory in the overall boy’s aggregate award which is the highest award we are eligible to receive at the carnival. With all 6 of our opposing schools being much larger in number, this was another example of BGS “punching above our weight”.

This carnival also saw some exceptional individual performances. Matthew Merrilees of Year 10 won the 200m, broke a BGS record in the discus, not only won the Under 16 High Jump, but broke both the BGS and long standing SIS record in the process. Year 12 student Joel Clausen was rewarded for his dedication to athletics both inside and outside of school, showing great improvement to win the 800m and 1500m events, smashing the current BGS record for each in the process. Other students who became SIS champions in multiple events at the carnival were Year 7 student James McCurdy who won both the 400m (new BGS record) and 1500m races at his first SIS Athletics Carnival, Chris Bourne in the 400m and Javelin (new BGS record) and Miller Marks-Boulton of year 10 who defended his triple jump crown as well as placing 1^st in long jump.

Special mention also goes to BGS record breakers Kade Lansbury in the Under 15 400m and Michael Bourne in the under 17 High Jump as well as Jet Marsham, Vanshdeep Daler, and Ash Chandrasinghe who all won an event each.

These achievements are the result of great dedication, effort and training by all members of the squad and I would like to congratulate all of our students for the way that they represented Berwick Grammar School at such a big event.
