Sporting Highlights

As Term 1  draws to a close three of our weekly sports teams are about to finish their seasons, just as the try-outs for our Term 2 sports begin. Senior Soccer and Intermediate Handball have been our best performed teams both currently in second place after having lost just one game each throughout the season. Our Intermediate Cricket team has lost their opening two matches, but have been extremely competitive in both narrow losses. In Term 2 we will field Junior teams in Basketball and Table-Tennis, as well as Intermediate Squads in Volleyball and Australian Rules, with our senior teams having a term off from weekly sport.

This term has also seen some great individual efforts outside of SIS Competition, with the highlights being Year 9 students Matthew Merrilees and Kyle Chipperfield competing at the Little Athletics Victoria Championship. Kyle specialised in Javelin whilst Matthew competed in the High Jump, 200 metres and discus events. Kyle placed 5th from 24 competitors in his event and Matthew performed best in his pet event High Jump where he qualified for the National Championships in Mid-March. Matthew had a best jump of 1.70m at the nationals and finished in 10th place overall, a great achievement!

The BGS Swimming Carnival will be our first Sports Carnival for the year  held on March 20 at Noble Park Aquatic Centre. Richards House will be looking to extend their winning streak to 4 as Forsyth and Battye look to get back on the winners list. There is also great anticipation surrounding the first ever BGS Staff vs students relay which should provide some light entertainment during the lunch break.
