Year 9 Casey Tech Excursion

On Wednesday 3 April the Year 9 cohort went on an excursion to Casey Tech School. The purpose of the excursion was to explore the use of CAD (Computer-Aided Design) in STEM. Using CAD software, the students explored the basics of digital drafting in order to create a 3D puzzle from a 2D design that was to be later cut out using a state-of-the-art laser cutter. The girls found the day to be challenging, as it was their first time using CAD software, but the skills and knowledge they gained from the experience made it worthwhile, especially for those interested in pursuing design as a career. They got to take home their puzzles to stump their friends and family.

After the program, two students (Gabrielle Lapierre and Annabelle Morton) were invited to do some filming for an upcoming STEMpowered and Women in STEM exhibition. They were given a fantastic opportunity to interview Dr Mei Cheah, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist, to have a conversation about how she got to where she is, what her working life is like and any tips for students looking to enter the field. The girls were nervous with anticipation leading up to the interview, but they were naturals once the camera turned on. Dr Mei was wonderful and a real inspiration for the girls, especially Annabelle who aspires to work in the Health field, giving a real insight into her work and her pathway to becoming a surgeon.
